چکیده

This paper presents visibility distances from twenty people who have viewed six internally illuminated elements of emergency lighting systems or wayguidance systems, under different ambient lighting, in smoke. The optical density of the smoke ranges from 0.8 m to 1.4 m. The six elements investigated are four emergency exit signs with graphical symbol formats and two types of exit door markings. The distance at which the elements are first visible through the smoke are reported, under no overhead lighting, emergency overhead lighting (producing between 1 and 2 lux on the floor) and normal lighting (producing between 130 and 190 lux on the floor). Statistical analysis shows that the total optical density of the smoke between the observer and sign or door marking is not significantly different between no overhead lighting and emergency overhead lighting, however both these situations allow the element to be seen through a greater total optical density than under normal overhead lighting. Significant differences between the total optical density of the smoke that the six elements can be seen through are also reported.

Factors Influencing Failure Emergency Evacuation in Work Environments during Fire

One of the necessary measures of saving human life in emergency situations, such as fires, is the safe and swift evacuation of people. The prerequisites for this are to anticipate, identify, and eliminate factors preventing people from leaving buildings in a timely and safe manner while moving them to a safe place [1]. The occurrence of errors caused by engineering, design, human, and psycholog...

Simulation of Visibility in Smoke Laden Environments

Exposure to the products of combustion, both particulate smoke and gaseous, rather than to the fire itself, is the most significant cause of injury and death in fires. The exposure time of individuals in a smoke environment depends upon their speed of movement and the direction they choose to travel, nominally towards a safe exit. Consequently in the fire safe design of modern buildings, the pr...

Exit Signs in Smoke: Design Parameters for Greater Visibility

A review of regulations and specifications for internally illuminated exit signs recommended or enforced by various sanctioning bodies in Canada, Great Britain and elsewhere reveals omissions and inconsistencies which may compromise the safety of building occupants in smoke. Since these problems are partly due to lack of conclusive research, a controlled psychophysical experiment was conducted ...

Crowd Evacuation for Indoor Public Spaces Using Coulomb's Law

This paper focuses on designing a tool for guiding a group of people out of a public building when they are faced with dangerous situations that require immediate evacuation. Despite architectural attempts to produce safe floor plans and exit door placements, people will still commit to fatal route decisions. Since they have access to global views, we believe supervisory people in the control r...

Experimental Evaluation of Depth Dose by Exit Surface Diode Dosimeters for Off-Axis Wedged Fields in Radiation Therapy

Introduction Evaluation of the delivered dose of externally wedged photon beams by external diode dosimeters during the treatment process requires the estimation of exit surface dose correction factors in various wedge angles and field sizes. Materials and Methods A system of absorbed dose evaluation, using p-type diode dosimeters placed on the exit surface of a phantom, was characterized for e...
